Cristiano Ronaldo reacted on the bench during Real Madrid 2-1 Man Utd
You suspect that if Real Madrid were playing against any other club than Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo wouldn’t have featured during Tuesday’s UEFA Super Cup.
The Portuguese superstar must have been desperate to play against his former employers and he came on for the final seven minutes after returning to training at the weekend.
Ronaldo received a huge cheer from both sets of supporters as he entered the fray and celebrated as Madrid secured a 2-1 victory over their English opponents.
Goals either side of half-time from Casemiro and Isco were enough to seal the Super Cup for Zinedine Zidane’s side.
Romelu Lukaku netted his first competitive goal for United in the 62nd minute but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation for the Red Devils.
It’s quite clear which of the two clubs Ronaldo truly loves.
The relationship between the two Portuguese compatriots deteriorated during their third and final season working together at the Bernabeu, but they appear to have made their peace since then.
Mourinho: Ref awarded Ronaldo too many free-kicks
However, Mourinho took a dig at Italian referee Gianluca Rocchi after the match, claiming he was too quick to award a free-kick every time Ronaldo hit the deck.
"We were playing a team full of fantastic players, we discussed the result until almost the end,” Mourinho was quoted as saying by Eurosport. “Then Cristiano came on and the referee wanted to show the respect for this amazing player. Every time Cristiano wanted it, the ref blew for a free-kick and the game was stopped."
